Termite Activity Levels in the United States

How Termites Live
Although there are more than 2,000 species of termites, the
Eastern and Western Subterranean Termites are by far the most
common, widest distributed and most damaging in the U.S.
These two closely-related species both eat cellulose, a complex
chemical in plant cell walls, and they're very important in the
natural decomposition of fallen trees and other plant products.
Subterranean termites build their colonies in the soil or in trees
or poles, and rely mainly on the soil for moisture.
A subterranean colony may have 60,000 to 1.5 million termites.
Property owners seldom see workers and soldiers, but in the spring
or fall they may see swarming “winged reproductives,” which can
easily be confused with winged ants unless you look closely.

Swarming Can Spread Termites Quickly
After a termite colony reaches a certain population level,
usually more than 10,000 winged reproductive swarmers develop and
leave the colony in a swarm .
Swarmers mate and then seek a suitable piece of a nest. A queen
can lay 1,000 eggs per day by her fourth year of life. If either the
king or queen dies, other colony members can change into
reproductives and replace the lost member of the pair.
How Termites Get Into Your Home
Subteranean termites live mainly in the ground and forage for
wood (food) farther and farther from the center of their colony area
as their numbers grow.
Foragers may make underground tunnels or above-ground “shelter
tubes” of mud, feces and debris which they use to search for new
food sources and to connect their feeding sites to the soil. They
can enter a building without direct wood contact with the soil
through these tubes.
They also enter buildings through cracks, expansion joints, foam
insulation below ground, hollow bricks or concrete blocks, or
through spaces around plumbing through openings as narrow as 1/32nd
of an inch. Any building — whether constructed with a slab, basement
or crawl space foundation — can be infested by termites.

Detecting and Controlling Termites is a Job For a Professional
Thorough inspection by a termite specialist is the first and most
important step in protecting your property. Experienced eyes can
locate specific areas in your building where a termite attack is
most likely.
If a termite infestation is found, the specialist can design a
treatment plan for your property. The plan can control a current
infestation or establish a chemical barrier or baiting system around
the structure to take care of future termite infestations.
New baiting techniques offer technicians and property owners more
options. At least four different chemical and one biological bait
are available. These systems all depend on careful monitoring by
trained and experienced experts in order to be effective.
Termite Treatment Methods
Liquid Treatments
Termidor
is made from a revolutionary "undetectable" chemical technology that
termites cannot see, smell, taste or avoid. Termites that touch
Termidor transfer it to every other termite they contact in a unique
process called the Transfer Effect. And because Termidor is
engineered to be slow-acting, termites have plenty of time to spread
it throughout their entire termite population.
How Termidor protects your home from termites
Termidor
is applied at very low rates. The active ingredient, Fipronil, is
used around the world for flea and tick control on household pets
and on agricultural crops, and it has virtually no odor. So you and
your family won't notice a thing! For an average home treatment,
Ross Environmental Solutions uses only about 8 ounces of the active
ingredient.

Termite Baiting Systems
The revolutionary Advance Termite Bait
System, proven to eliminate termite colonies in and around
your home, offers advantages and long-term protection of your
biggest investment – your home.

|
-
First, a Ross Environmental Solutions certified professional
will inspect your home for termites and if they are found or
your risk is high, the Advance Termite Bait System will be
installed around the perimeter of your home.
-
Ross will check the stations regularly for termite activity.
(Fig. 1)
-
When termites are found in a station (Fig. 2), the Termite
Inspection Cartridge is replaced with a termite bait cartridge
that termites will feed on. (Fig. 3)
-
As termites feed and then travel back to the colony, they
share the bait and send other termites back to feed on it. As
feeding on the bait continues and more termites are affected,
the colony starts to die and is eliminated.
-
After a colony is eliminated, we replace the bait with new
termite inspection cartridges. Your Ross Environmental Solutions
pest management professional will continue to inspect the
cartridges regularly to discover new colonies that might invade
your property. (Fig. 4)
Advantages of the Advance Termite Bait
System
-
Sturdy station designed to minimize tampering by children or
pets.
-
Dual-stage process that features an ultra low disturbance
design to pattern termite’s natural feeding behavior, leading to
better colony elimination.
-
Features Puri-Cell™, a unique food source preferred in
studies by termites over the wood used in most homes.
-
Allows significant amount of bait to be fed to the colony in
less time to eliminate your termite colony faster, giving you
peace of mind.

Inspections
We will thoroughly inspect your home or business at no charge to
you. The inspection will be done by a Credentialed
Wood-Destroying Insect Inspector who has been trained and
certified by the New Jersey Pest Management Association.
A Credentialed Wood-Destroying Inspector is an individual who has
completed the credentialing program and exams, has a Category 7B
Commercial Termite Applicator Certification, and a minimum of two
years experience in termite and wood destroying insect inspections.
Why is this important?
Unfortunately, the State of New Jersey does NOT have any rules,
regulations, licensing requirements, training or prerequisites of
any kind to govern those who perform inspections. But a Credentialed
Inspector has passed an extensive training course and has complete
understanding of termites and wood-destroying insects.
Every inspector at Ross Environmental Solutions is credentialed.
So you can rest easy knowing your inspection will be the most
thorough.
