Most Common Stinging Insects Found in New Jersey

Bald-Faced Hornet– These hornets are most known for their white head and unique markings. They build a nest that is shaped like a football and papery. They usually build them hanging from tall trees. They aren’t usually interested in people, but they will sting if they feel threatened.
Honey Bee– The honey bee is essential to our survival and for that reason, is protected by law. They are furry and play a big role in pollination. Their honey can cause staining and damage to structures though, and they do sting when they feel threatened. Overall, they are very docile, but they attract other pests like cockroaches and ants with their honey.
Sweat Bees– While the sting of a sweat bee is considered to be minor, it is still unpleasant. They are attracted to humans because of our sweat. They gather sweat droplets when they land on you. This bee is very small and have a shiny metallic green body.
Bumble Bee– If there is a bumble bee around you, you know it by their loud buzz. These are large, fuzzy bees that are commonly found here. They live in large colonies underground and are fairly docile. They don’t care too much about humans unless their nest is disturbed or they feel threatened otherwise.
Carpenter Bee– These bees are often mistaken for bumble bees because they are also large. They have a shiny abdomen rather a furry one, and this is the most distinctive difference in appearance. Only females have stingers, but the males have been known to dive bomb anyone that comes close to the nest.
