With the colony starting to get larger, the summer is a time for continued growth. The queen will continue to lay her eggs throughout this season as well. Shockingly enough, by the end of the summer, the colony may have grown to hundreds or even thousands of wasps. You will notice that there are increased numbers of wasps swarming around your outdoor gatherings. This is especially true if there is food involved. They are attracted to any protein or sweet foods.
Are Wasp Stings Worse in the Fall?
As we move into the early fall season, there will be more wasps in the colony than ever. This means that they will be searching for food that is scarce. For this reason, you might notice that the aggression in these insects starts to increase. They are not only searching for food, but they are also trying to protect their queen. Without her survival, the colony has no chance of survival next year. Watch out for these insects during this season as they are incredibly aggressive.
Are Stinging Insects Active in Winter?
This is the quietest season of all for wasps. The queen has likely found a warm place to duck for cover from the cold temperatures. The queen will go into a diapause which means that her growth will be paused as she awaits warmer weather of spring. She might find shelter in your attic, chimney or even under a log. For this reason, you might notice wasps in your home on the first warm days of the spring season. Most of the colony is going to die off as the weather continues to dip.
