When they are that close to your home, they will more easily get into your home.
Put a Cover on Firewood
Keeping moisture off the firewood is a big part in keeping pests out of it. Not only that, but when your firewood is wet, you can’t burn it. Pests like carpenter ants and termites will be looking for wet wood as this is easier for them to eat and build nests in. Whether you are covering it with a tarp or building a structure that will keep moisture off of it, this is an important step.
Store Firewood Off the Ground
When your firewood is resting on the ground, it is more likely to get wet as well. By lifting the pile a few inches off the ground, you eliminate a good portion of the pest problem. Firewood is best stored in something like pallets to keep up from making contact with the ground.
Rotate Your Firewood
The easy thing to do when you are piling up your firewood is to use whatever is on the top of the stack. This may mean that the bottom portion of your firewood goes a long time without getting used. This older wood makes the perfect place for a pest nest. If they feel that the area is untouched, rodents may decide that is the right place to get some shelter from the elements. As you stack new firewood, make sure the old stuff is moved to the top of the stack.
