How to Get Rid of a Yellow Jacket Wasp Nest in the Ground
Yellow jacket wasps will build their nests in tree trunks and tops, walls, and even in the ground. Depending on where the wasps have chosen to build their nest will determine which method you will want to use to control them. This first method is if they are beginning to build their nest in the ground. Most yellow jacket wasp nests will have multiple entrances. However, there is a primary one they will use more frequently. If you have located the nest, and have found the primary entry point, place a clear glass bowl over it. Do not cover all of their entrances or they will create new ones. In many cases, they will fly around confused and eventually hopefully die off.
How to Get Rid of Yellow Jackets Naturally
This method will work regardless of where their nest is. Near the new nest, hang a piece of fruit or even meat in a tree. Next place a bucket filled with soapy water (add liquid dish soap) directly underneath the bait. Yellow jacket wasps are known to be gluttons and will overeat when the opportunity arises. Once this occurs, they will attempt to fly off. As they do, they will often fall and if they land in water they will drown and die. This will help reduce the colony members and without enough workers the colony won’t thrive and eventually die off.
Shop Vac Yellow Jacket Removal
There is another stinging insect removal method where you can remove yellow jacket wasps by sucking them up with a shop vacuum. You simply take the filter out of the vacuum and fill it will a few inches of water. Next you go to the entrance of the nest and begin sucking the wasps up. The water will prevent them from flying back out and will kill them. Ross Environmental Solutions doesn’t recommend this method as there is a high risk of getting stung. If you are determined however, definitely only attempt this method at night when the yellow jackets are no longer active. In addition, you will want to wear thick protective clothing and something to protect your face and eyes.
