What Do German Cockroaches Look Like?
The German cockroach is one most the most common species of cockroaches found indoors. German cockroaches are light brown or tan in color with two black or dark brown stripes on the back of their head. They have a set of wings, but as adults they rarely fly. Wings are only found on the adult. The nymphs won’t have any.
Where Do German Cockroaches Come from?
German cockroaches can survive outdoors, however they do prefer to dwell indoors. You will find these cockroaches in warmer, more humid areas of a home, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and the kitchen. German cockroaches like to hide in boxes and often find their way into homes and buildings as people carry in boxes and other items. The German cockroach is far from a picky eater. They of course they will eat any discarded food left by people. However they will also eat pet food, toothpaste, glue and even paper. They have a highly active reproductive system, where a female cockroach can lay 4 to 6 egg cases that contain anywhere from 30 to 40 eggs inside each case. Therefore, it doesn’t take long for them to infest your home.
Signs of a German Cockroach Infestation
A German cockroach leaves a few clear signs to their presence. German cockroaches are most active during the day. The most obvious sign is, of course, seeing them running around. Even one cockroach could be a sign of an infestation. Another sign of a German cockroach infestation is the smell. These pests will leave an oily musty smell in the air. The stronger the smell, the bigger problem you have. Are you seeing coffee or pepper grinds around? Hate to break it to you, but that’s probably German cockroach poop. Make sure you vacuum up these messes and bleach your floors afterward. If you’re finding corpses of these cockroach species around regularly, this means the infestation is likely worse than you think. Once a Germen cockroach reaches adulthood they will live anywhere from 100 to 200 days. If they live out their life span, most likely they are breeding.
